Email attachment sizes

Solution

There is a maximum size set for email attachments in both incoming and outgoing mail. This is necessary to avoid very large attachments being used by abusers to deliberately cripple the mail server.

The limits are as follows:

  1. Potterspury Server: 48 MB
  2. Gridhost Server: 50 MB (using a mail client such as Outlook or Thunderbird)
  3. Gridhost Server: 30 MB (using Webmail)

However, you should bear in mind that the process of sending email attachments is not efficient - they are broken into chunks which increase their size to almost double the original and are re-assembled at the recipient's end. Thus about half of the above figures is a reasonable figure to aim for.
